Erie Maud-Mary Richards was the daughter of Caroline and John Richards. She was probably born in England during 1879 or early 1880, while her family was there visiting relatives on her father's side. Her family then moved to Clio (Mich.), where Erie attended school through the 8th grade. She then began teaching school, eventually teaching in Genesee, Delta, and Isabella counties (Mich.).
